Damage caused in the heart’s valves are
rheumatic heart disease. It is caused by rheumatic fever due to streptococcal bacteria.
Rheumatic fever is also known as inflammatory disease.
Valvular heart disease means the heart’s valves keep blood flowing through in the right direction. Valves may narrow, leak or not closed properly which can lead to valvular damage. Valvular diseases are also caused by birth, and infections in connective tissue disorder. Rheumatic fever occurs in about 325,000 children each year and about 33.4 million people currently have rheumatic
heart disease. The disease is most common in the developing world and among indigenous peoples in the developed world.
